How Does it Work? Answering the Most Common ERP Questions

Hi Everyone,

As an ADempiere and iDempiere integrator, the single most common questions I get are “How does XYZ work?” or “What happens if I click ABC?”. The purpose of this post is to help you answer these questions.

Embrace The Code

If you are using ADempiere or iDempiere and you have not downloaded the code, do it now (Adempiere on AWS). The code is the single best way to understand how the application works. As a business owner or manager, assign someone to perform this task. If this person needs help, I can usually get a reasonably technical person up and running within 4 training hours. Do not be intimidated by code. Open source ERP helps you think about operational efficiency, accuracy and insight is new and different way. It is a discontinuous change in how you use ERP.

Here is an example question: “where is the business partner’s Pay From field used?” The below screen shot tells you that the Pay From field is used to set the default location on Invoices and Dunning Runs.

This may seem like a trivial question; however, there are thousands of fields like this throughout an ERP. Few ERP systems provide quality documentation. ADempiere and iDempiere help you ensure all questions can be answered accurately and succinctly.

Please note that ADempiere, iDempiere and Openbravo are forks or copies from Compiere. Therefore, they have similar abilities mentioned above. The biggest difference is that ADempiere and iDempiere are pure open source. There are no features held behind a commercial or paid license.
